The passage you quote about Johnny Gow and his wife, especially the last line, is devastating. It's really stuck with me. I love Ruth Park. Sometimes this book seems quite contrived, and some aspects of it date, but gee she's terrific. ... lots of heart and an ability to embrace opposites... love, hate, brutality, delicacy, everything in between.
